Queer nature of Rohan Island: Guided Walk with Jan Albert Šturma on the Treasures of Karlín Nature

In addition to the mass-produced botany found in interiors and public spaces, a somehow different and more independent flora has established itself in the city. It is the vegetation of spontaneous plants growing near settlements and paths, having learnt to coexist with people. They survive in complicated conditions thanks to extremely effective breeding strategies, often having to overcome mechanical destruction or other pitfalls of human activity. It is remarkable how often we overlook and ignore this pervasive nature of neglected public spaces, rubble sites, ditches, or railway embankments. However, it forms a biodiversity all around us. The walk will start at the gallery and will lead us to the forgotten nooks of Rohan Island.

Meeting point: in front of VI PER Gallery at 18:00, Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Jan Albert Šturma studied phytogeography at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague. His research areas are landscape ecology and ecology of plant communities with the focus on suburban and industrial vegetation, ethnobotany of former Sudetenland and increasing biodiversity of intensively used agricultural landscape. He collaborated with Céline Baumann on the Third Landscape concept for the exhibition Queer Nature in the VI PER Gallery.
